THE WAY WE DO concrete sidewalk & walkways

Every customer has a different need that is why every project is unique with its own demands and challenges requiring personalized solutions. However, mostly concrete sidewalk & walkways project involves the following steps:

One of our concrete contractors will arrange a meeting to discuss design choices and requirements. A suitable concrete type, pattern, colour, finish and shape will also be recommended.

Manual labour and specialized machinery is used to prepare the work area and remove the excavated material from the site.

Depending on the selected design, a temporary mould is created into which fresh concrete is poured and set.

The next step is adding gravel. This will provide proper base for drainage under the concrete. The gravel is then graded and compacted according to the elevation.

Steel reinforcement is then imbedded into the freshly poured concrete to add strength and eliminate any concrete separation.

Concrete is poured into the prepared area with the help of wheelbarrow or concrete truck. The fresh concrete is instantly levelled and then screeded by drawing a straight-edged tool in a back and forth motion across the surface of the wet concrete.

The finishing process and techniques depends on the type of the desired finish.

You can choose:

Regular White Concrete: It is ideal for concrete driveways, patios, walkways, slabs, floors and many other concrete structures. Regular concrete can have a few different finishes, including:

  • Broom finish – fine lines are created on the top layer to make a non-slippery surface.
  • Hand spin finish– created by hand textured trowelling.
  • Smooth finish – top layer is perfectly smoothened using a trowel to create a clean, modern-looking surface.

Coloured Stamped Concrete: A decorative finish commonly used for driveways, patios, sidewalks. Stamped finish is patterned flagstone. Various colours and patterns can be used.

Exposed Aggregate Concrete: The top layer of cement is removed to reveal the small pebbles in the concrete.

All the formwork is removed and cleared away.

After the concrete has started to harden and cure, cuts are made using a saw to create control joints or they can be hand tooled. These joints act as guides to help cracking follow along the joints and relieve further stresses. This helps in minimizing cracking from developing by compensating for the changes that concrete may go through because of temperature fluctuations and the shrinkage during the curing process.

Pressure washing is used before sealing the concrete.

Once all the major construction steps are complete, our team will properly clear the site of any debris and also wash the required areas.

Depending on the choice of the customer we will provide the Sealer required for the job. Note that Concrete sealers help provide protection to the concrete surface.
